DR. MATHEW POMBO, M.D.

Dr. Pombo joins the Emory Orthopaedic surgery faculty as a highly regarded orthopaedic surgeon, speaker, author and researcher who specializes in getting patients with injuries back to an active lifestyle. His professional interests include anatomic single and double bundle ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, meniscal/cartilage injury and repair, joint preservation in the aging athlete, and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery of the knee and shoulder. Dr. Pombo has conducted extensive scientific research, published multiple journal articles, written several book chapters, and has presented both at national and international meetings on topics related to sports medicine, concussions, and orthopaedic surgery. He is a member of several design teams for orthopaedic companies and enjoys participating in the engineering of the next generation of orthopaedic techniques and equipment. He has been instrumental in bringing awareness to Sports Related Concussions and the new Georgia "Return to Play" Act and is one of the top regarded experts in the area for the treatment of Concussions. He currently serves as the Director of the Emory Sports Concussion Program.  Dr. Pombo is a native of Atlanta and a product of Duluth High School in Gwinnett County. He attended The Georgia Institute of Technology before opting to enroll early at The Medical College of Georgia to obtain his Medical Degree. He graduated as one of the youngest students in his class and the youngest inductee into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. He attended Wake Forest University for his Orthopaedic residency and did his Orthopaedic Sports Medicine/Shoulder Surgery and Concussion fellowship at the "World Renowned" University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has been a team physician for several professional, collegiate, and local sports teams. Since returning to Atlanta he has enjoyed giving back to the community that has given him so much.  Dr. Pombo currently serves as the head team physician for The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, Berkmar High School since 2008, Chattahoochee High School since 2010, and Johns Creek High School since 2009.  Dr. Pombo, his wife, and two boys, Eli and Henry, live in Johns Creek, Ga. Dr. Pombo enjoys spending time with his family during his days off. Many of his patients also enjoy watching him succeed in his second career as a professional race car driver where he can be found driving at race tracks across North America.?

TANGELA MCCORKLE, BOC CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER?

Tangela McCorkle, our Certified Athletic Trainer, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training at Valdosta State University. She also interned with the Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri as the head athletic trainer for their track and field team. Following undergraduate school, she attended Austin Peay State University where she earned a Masters of Science degree in Health and Human Performance as a graduate assistant. She worked for Georgia Rehabilitation Center in Newnan, Georgia as an outreach athletic trainer for Sandy Creek High School. She has been at Chattahoochee High School since January of 2006. After the completion of a Masters in Teaching she began teaching Healthcare science for Chattahoochee as well.?

APRIL MCKINNEY, MAT, ATC

April was born and raised in Carson, CA. She attended UCLA and received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2004. While a student there, she participated in the UCLA Athletics Sports Medicine Internship Program which is how she got her start in athletic training. She then went on to earn her Masters of Athletic Training from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2006. From 2006-2013, April returned to UCLA Sports Medicine where she worked with Women's Rowing, Track and Field, Cross Country, and Softball. In 2013, April relocated to Atlanta, GA where she began working at Chattahoochee High School.   April is excited to be part of Emory Sports Medicine and looks forward to providing the best care for the Chattahoochee community!??
